EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial news:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the case was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the new year, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, following signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
